The Mechanisms
“Justice”
[Spoken: Jonny d'Ville]
As death surrounded Camelot, in the town hall the three Pendragons squared against each other. In each heart love warred with greed. And in each mind scenarios whirled. Guinevere was the quickest draw, no question, but perhaps she could only take one of them out before the other got her. Lancelot was the best shot, if he managed to clear leather, it was all over. Arthur could beat him on speed, but perhaps Guinevere was counting on this. No sound broke the silence, as an eddy of rust blew in from the open door.

And then all at once, they found their hands were moving away from their guns. They looked each other in the eye, and knew that love had won. Guinevere and Lancelot nodded, and Arthur stepped forward to declare himself Captain with their blessing.

They knew what would happen now. Fort Galfridean would live again. They could activate the engines, move the station away from the sun. They could bring back prosperity to the hydroponics and repair the radiation shielding. Just this once, there could be a happy ending.

Three shots rang out from the shadows of the doorway. Guinevere fell dead. Lancelot fell dead. Arthur fell to his knees. Mordred walked in with tears in his eyes and blood on his hands.

[Mordred]
“Father, I'm- I'm sorry.”

[Jonny d'Ville]
What passed between them then is perhaps too personal for us to speak of, but at the end of it, Mordred dragged his wounded father into the lifepod, and with the press of a single button fired him into the aether. All that Mordred loved, all he hoped and dreamed laid dead and bleeding on the Camlann wastes.

He walked to the console and declared a new Captain. He set a new course, and activated the engines. The heat began to grow, not slow, but fast as console sparked and caught fire. But Mordred's heart was ice. The sound of death still rang in his ears, and as the last high noon sounded outside, Mordred rode his rotten world into the sun.
