Vika & Linda
If I Could Start Today Again - Live
[Intro, spoken]
"We're gonna do a ballad for you now. It's a Paul Kelly song. Uh, he wrote this in the studio while we were rehearsing for Two Wings, and, uh, Linda heard the, the lyrics and said to Paul, "I'd love to sing that song - can I PLEASE sing the song."
He said, "Look, I hope you don't mind, Linda, but Vika should sing this song. The lyrics apply more to Vika than they do to you."
And I thought, "Oh well, uh, what's it about? Let's hear it" And I got a bit offended 'cause this song's about putting your foot in your mouth, saying the wrong thing, telling people what you think of them and then regretting everything that you've said. This song's called If I Could Start Today Again."
[Verse 1]
All the kings and queens in the bible
They could not turn back time
So what chance have I of a miracle
In this life of mine?
[Chorus]
I only want one day
To unsay the things I said
Undo the thing I did
24 little hours
Oh God, can you wipe them all away?
And I promise I will change
If could start today again
[Verse 2]
I know I'm not the "milk and honey" kind
Today I proved it true
But when the red mist falls around my eyes
I know not what I do
[Chorus]
Please give me back today
I won't say the things I said
Or do the thing I did
Every minute, every hour
The replay's just the same
And I can't stand the shame
Oh, let me start today again
[Chorus]
I only want one day
One lousy day, that's all
Of every day that's been before
Since time began
I know my prayer's in vain
So for a second, I'll pretend
That I can start today again
