Indeed he had landed, on top of a tree
A giant, proud Eagle with eyes that could see
To the horizon, the beyond and then some
Like a prophet with visions of what was to come
"I came back to my kingdom, my reign has begun
I chase out the darkness and I bring back the sun
Here is my realm now, my land of the day
Stand down little being... Be gone! Go away!"
Owl uttered no word, she was thoroughly stunned
As never before had she been quite this shunned
But then she snapped back and said "Was that a thrеat?!
Of all the vile things you've sung, this you'll rеgret!"
"I am the Owl and my crown is the moon!
I'm the huntress, the watcher! I'll show you real soon
How well versed in carving I am with my claw
And as life leaves your limbs you'll watch me in awe!"
"You're nothing", she went on, "but a speck in my sky!
This is my answer! And this is how you will die!
Nothing can hurt me, I do not know fear!
I'll strike down with full fury and pierce like a spear!"
Thus spoke the Owl and her words all rang true
With force and conviction she knew what to do
With aim at her victim her target was set
But Eagle took off, and flew higher yet
"Nothing", asked Eagle, "can hurt you at all?
You lie to yourself and that's why you'll fall!
I have my eyes and help with four legs
And I've heard of your children... yes I know of your eggs!"
"I've seen how you nurture your claw-full of seed
I will thoroughly enjoy them, now it's my time to feed!"
Eagle's eyes shined with a terrifying lust
And in the blink of an eye, Owl's rage turned to dust
Owl stopped flying mid air as Eagle went on
"I know what you fear, and thus comes the dawn
You can't stop the sunrise, just look to the east!
As you can't stop me from having my feast!"
The queen was dethroned and all came to change
She flew upon winds feeling weakened and strange
For the first time she doubted and for the first time she strayed
For the first time this night Owl was afraid
Flying faster than ever like a spear thrown into space
She feared what sinister things would this night make her face?
She flew to the place where her tiny ones slumbered
Her nest lied there peaceful as her whole being crumbled
She grabbed them as gently as her claws let her do
And she whispered so softly, "I will protect you"
Then she took off with her wings spread out wide
As she sang out her promise to each unborn child
The winds sang along as they carried her higher
So far from the light where night was entire
Together they drifted, turned, and arose
And never before had her moon been so close
